MoodleGCSE Course Content

Students who opt for GCSE Art must show a personal commitment to the subject. They will be expected to work on a variety of themes using a wide variety of drawing, painting and sculptural/collage materials.

Homework is an essential part of the course and must be done to the highest standard. The most successful students will also put in extra time after school and at lunchtimes. The coursework element of the subject consists of a number of practical projects, which should demonstrate a breadth of qualities. Drawing, developing ideas, use of different media and a knowledge of the work and processes of artists should be present. The examination element of the course is in the form of a project with a set preparation period leading to a 10 hour controlled test in which the final piece will be produced. Students will be given the opportunity to work in the following areas:

  • Drawing and Painting
  • 3D studies
  • Computer design
  • Collage and mixed media
  • Print-making

BTEC First Certificate in Art & Design Course content

What is BTEC first certificate in Art & Design?
A BTEC First Certificate is a practical, work-related course. You will learn by completing
projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and
demands. It will introduce you to the employment area of Art & Design and provides a good
basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification. A BTEC First Certificate is
equivalent to two GCSEs grades A*- C, but will be done as a single option subject.
You will be awarded a pass/merit or distinction for your work-
Pass = 2 Grade C
Merit = 2 Grade B
Distinction = 2Grade A or A*


What will you study?
The course is made up of three units - two mandatory core units and one specialist unit.
There is no examination in this course. The two core units are '2D and 3D Visual
Communication' and 'Contextual References in Art and Design'.
Within these you will build up a range of skills including, drawing, painting, printing, collage,
ICT, 3D and photography and learn how these can be incorporated within the work place.
The third unit you will complete is ‘Working with Visual Art Briefs’.
Within this unit you will learn how to research and record information from primary and
secondary sources in response to a brief, be able to explore and use materials, equipment
and techniques, understand how to plan and develop ideas and produce final outcomes that
meet the requirements of the brief.
