Homework Guidelines
Key Stage 3 Key Stage 4

We have redesigned the homework diary in consultation with pupils and staff with the aim of encouraging all pupils to develop self-discipline in taking responsibility for their own learning and organisation.

The aim of homework is to support and extend learning from lessons taught in school through:

Enabling practice of skills learnt in class

Developing research and investigation skills

Preparing for lessons

Testing understanding and knowledge

Stimulating individual research

Homework is set which is meaningful and appropriate to the subject and pupils are expected to complete work and hand it in on time.

Teaching staff will:

  • Set and mark homework regularly following the guidelines for each year group
  • Ensure work is relevant and part of a planned programme to develop skills and knowledge
  • Give feedback on all homework through teacher, peer or self-assessment
  • Set a range of types of homework appropriate to pupil ability and subject

Pupils will:

  • Record all homework accurately in their diary
  • Take pride and care of homework diaries and all books
  • Tell teachers if there are particular problems or needs regarding homework
  • Hand in homework on time

Parents will:

  • Make it clear to pupils that homework matters and should be done carefully
  • Check homework diaries and sign them every week
  • Recognise that homework may include written work, reading, design or drawing, research work and revision/learning
  • Contact school if there are any concerns regarding homework

Pupils will be set homework weekly, fortnightly or will produce an extended project over a period of time as appropriate to the subject.

What if …

…………………… a pupil does not bring their planner to a lesson? Here a subject teacher would question the pupil and also refer the matter to the Form Tutor in case a similar pattern may be in danger of developing across a range of subjects. The Form Tutor will liaise with the Year Co-ordinator who would seek to work with the support of parents in tackling the matter.

……………….homework is not completed by a deadline?

The subject teacher will in the first instance seek to put the matter right on a one-to-one basis with the pupil in question but may make a referral to the Head of Department if necessary. In rare instances where a problem still remains, the Year Co-ordinator would then notify parents of the problem.

…………… as a parent, you don’t think that enough homework is being set in a particular subject indicated on the homework/coursework timetable.

Please contact Mrs. Holden (Deputy Head) who will investigate the matter with the Head of Department of the subject concerned in the hope of being able to resolve the matter to your satisfaction.

………… as a parent, you think that too much homework is being set in a particular subject on the homework/coursework timetable?

Again please contact Mrs. Holden (Deputy Head).

Please note that we are keen to ensure that a full and continuous programme of homework/coursework is set and regularly monitor the setting of homework within subject teams. In conclusion, the ultimate aim of setting homework in partnership with parents is to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential at The Hollins Technology College.
