Welcome – Bienvenue – Bienvenido
At The Hollins we have a languages department with four dedicated teachers who in total speak 6 foreign languages. We pride ourselves on delievering high quality, enjoyable lessons. We believe that language learning opens up opportunities to meet people from other countries and experience new environments and cultures.
Miss C King (Head of Department)
I loved languages throughout school so decided to study French and German at Nottingham University. Whilst at University, I spent a year abroad living in both Germany and France which was such a rewarding experience. Since graduating, I have spent time living in Sweden. I also spent a year working at a language school in Manchester teaching English as a foreign language to people from all over the world. I have been teaching French at The Hollins since September (2009) as part of my Graduate Training Programme and I really enjoy the community spirit and lively atmosphere.

I have always been fascinated by languages so I studied both French and Spanish from an early age. After doing a language degree and experiencing teaching English in both France and Spain, I decided to teach languages. I wanted to help young people discover how important and fun languages are. When I finished training I was lucky enough to start at the Hollins, teaching French and Spanish to all year groups. Since being here I have worked with some of the best teachers and have the pleasure of teaching our excellent pupils.
Mrs J Granter
On my first day at school I went home and apparently told my mum “I’m going to be a teacher”! Languages were my favourite lesson so at 18 years old I decided to do a languages degree at Manchester University. I spent a year living in Russia with a Russian family. I had one of the most fantastic years of my life there and thought “I have to let other people know about this” and that’s when I decided to become a languages teacher. I worked in a specialist language college for 6 years and then decided to join the Hollins. I love working here and having fun teaching French and Spanish and even Russian sometimes during lunchtime.
Mrs H Dougan
I did a French degree at University because I loved languages, I also spent a year in Lyon as part of my degree. When I left university I worked for a year as a homecare assistant, looking after the elderly and disabled people before deciding upon my career path. I loved working with people, and didn’t want to leave languages behind. I decided to become a languages teacher and I’ve never looked back! I can honestly say that whilst working at The Hollins, I have taught some of the most motivated and enthusiastic children of my career.
