Languages Department

MoodleWelcome

At Hollins we have a languages language department with four dedicated teachers. Access to a foreign language can bring personal and intellectual satisfaction. It opens up opportunities for meeting people of other nations, experiencing different environments and cultures and even living and working another areas of the world.

Language DepartmentEvery nation values its identity and its language and wishes to preserve and continue its traditions. Knowledge of another people's language makes their existence as real as our own and so we come to evaluate ourselves in comparison with other individuals, social groups and systems.

Department Staff

Mrs H Dougan

Mrs H DouganI did a French degree at University because I loved languages, I also spent a year in Lyon as part of degree. When I left university I worked for a year as a homecare assistant, looking after the elderly and disabled people before deciding upon my career path. I loved working with people, and did't want to leave languages behind. I decided to become a languages teacher and I've never looked back! I can honestly say that whilst working at The Hollins, I have taught some of the most motivated and enthusiastic children of my career.

Mrs C Hemissi

Mrs C Hemissi I have always been fascinated by languages so I studied both French and Spanish from an early age.  After doing a language degree and experiencing teaching English in both France and Spain, I decided to teach languages. I wanted to help young people discover how important and fun languages are. When I finished training I was lucky enough to start at the Hollins, teaching French and Spanish to all year groups. Since being here I have worked with some of the best teachers and have the pleasure of teaching our excellent pupils.

Mr M Smith

Mr M Smith After getting an A for German GCSE, I stopped studying languages. I really regretted this for a few years later when I decided to travel around Europe. This experience motivated me to study Spanish at University and I loved it!  After finishing University, I moved to Madrid where I spent 3 years teaching English before deciding to come back to England to teach Spanish.

Although I'm a relative newcomer to Hollins, I am very happy here and I am sure that I’ll be here for years to come!

Miss C King

Miss C King I loved languages throughout school so decided to study French and German at Nottingham University. Whilst at University, I spent a year abroad living in both Germany and France which was such a rewarding experience. Since graduating, I have spent time living in Sweden. I also spent a year working at a language school in Manchester teaching English as a foreign language to people from all over the world. I have been teaching French at The Hollins since September (2009) as part of my Graduate Training Programme and I really enjoy the community spirit and lively atmosphere.
