| Clothes Show visit - December 2007 |
|
Thirty nine GCSE Textile students from years 10 and 11, accompanied by six staff, travelled to the Clothes Show at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham to pick up ideas for coursework and their final exams. It was a long day - the coach left school promptly at 6.30am. returning at 6.45pm. The students shopped till they dropped and the fashion show was amazing with a more male influence the year - a lot of "scantily" clad males-in speedos!!! – in one section wearing ONLY white jackets and speedo style underwear!!!! Wow, what a sight!!! Mrs Wild, Head of Department, reported ‘the students behaved brilliantly – the best group we've ever taken’. Photo Gallery |
| Science Enterprise Day - November 2007 |
|
Incident tape around the entrance to the hall and staff scurrying around in white protective overalls, as seen on all good crime shows, alerted the rest of the school to the forensic science workshop enjoyed by Year 9 students on Friday 30 th November. Organised by SET POINT, the aim was to allow the students to solve a crime, brilliantly acted by the year 11 drama students, using various investigative procedures. The final session brought all the students together for a PowerPoint presentation which showed them how evidence is collected to solve real crimes. |

| Mel is an International Gymnast |
|
Melanie Evans (year 10) has been selected to compete at international level, where she will be resplendent in the red of Wales.
Melanie is eligible to compete for Scotland, through her father, or England, but if all goes to plan she may be standing with a gold medal around her neck at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi - all thanks to her Welsh grandfather.
She first began at Accrington Gymnastics Club aged eight and received her national tracksuit and leotard ahead of making her debut in the Celtic Cup gymnastics fixture on 24 and 25 February in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
She is also due to compete against gymnasts from across northern Europe in another international fixture later this year, after impressing in recent competitions.
Among highlights were finishing third in 2006 North West championships and fourth in the 12-13 year old 'espoir' class at the British Challenge Cup last year.
As well as travelling a round trip of 65 miles from her home to Blackpool six times a week for training, Melanie also regularly joins up with the North West regional squad in Liverpool, and now faces racking up more miles to train in Cardiff.

Pupils and staff attended a presentation by Greg Pope, MP, at Tesco Haslingden, as local schools converted their 'Tesco Computers for Schools' vouchers into valuable, new equipment.
Hollins pupils collected:
- a microscope for examining fibres & fabrics in Textiles.
- a selection of computer software for use in Pupil Support.
Two year 9 pupils attended with Mrs Wild and after the presentation they heard a brief talk from the store manager about Tesco's community support initiatives.
Many thanks to all parents, pupils, staff and friends of The Hollins who donated their vouchers. We'll be doing it again next year! |
