| Accrington Science Challenge - April 2008 |
 |
On Thursday 3rd April 2008 three year 8 pupils took part in the Accrington Science Challenge hosted by St. Christopher's High School.
Alan, Elliot & Lance worked extremely hard on preparing a presentation on 'The Circulatory System' which they demonstrated to the judges and fellow competitors. They also carried out a dissection on three hearts to better illustrate their message.
Whilst they did not win the event they did prove that they could research their given topic independently and with great enthusiasm. Well Done!
The team will be running the demonstration again for their year group, in assembly, on Tuesday 29th April.
As a reward for all their hardwork, the boys will be accompanying Mrs Bowler, head of science, to to Dr Gunther von Hagens ‘Body Worlds 4’ exhibition at Manchester Museum of Science and Industry on 16th May.

| Mosque Visit - March 2008 |
 |
The week beginning Monday 24th March, 150 year eight students from The Hollins Technology College visited Markazi Jame mosque in Nelson as part of the RE curriculum. The students were shown around the mosque by the Iman and routines such as Wudu (ablution or ritual washing) were demonstrated. The pupils (and staff!) had a chance to ask questions, complete a quiz and share a meal which had been arranged by the Accrington Faith Partnership, a local inter-faith group who we have forged strong links with. The pupils were all impeccably well-behaved and really enjoyed the chance to experience what happens in a mosque and the opportunity to ask any questions. The questions were entered into a prize draw and three pupils who asked them were selected to win a £10 Gift voucher. On 13 th of June, a number of our pupils will be taking part in an inter-schools debate which is to be held at the annual ‘Celebrating Faith’ event at Accrington Town Hall. The free event is a chance to celebrate the faiths of Accrington and all are welcome.

|
The Hollins was again asked to host the Rotary Technology Tournament for Hyndburn and Ribble Valley schools. 120 pupils from 16 schools took part in the challenge to build a bridge which could open to let a boat through, yet support a 1KG weight, using only card, paper straws and lots of cello tape. The successful schools were Westholme, in the Key stage 3 category, and St Augustine’s at key stage 4. Our own pupils performed very well on the day with no collapsing bridges but didn’t quite manage to make it into the prize categories well done to:

| Visit To Accrington Stanley Football Club - March 2008 |
|
A group of year 7 & 8 pupils were invited to visit Accrington Stanley Football ground on Thursday 27th March. A tour of the ground, it's command centre, changing rooms, board room and executive lounge was followed by a 'meet the player' session when Mark King & Leam Richardson called in to field questions about their careers and roles at the club.
This was followed by an excellent art workshop where everyone made a 'Football Character' puppet. The club very kindly gave each pupil a 'goody bag' which included a football & 2 free tickets to home games.
The club is staging an exhibition about the history of the club as seen by its supporters
and the local community. We hope some of our work will be on show there. The exhibition will be held in Accrington library in July 2008. Picture Gallery |

| Ski Trip - January 2008 |

|
This year the ski trip took place in Montgenèvre, a small village in France close to the Italian border. This meant that we had to fly into Turin airport and then cross the border into France on a gruelling 2 hour coach trip.
When we arrived at our 3-star hotel called Les Rois Mages we were allocated our rooms, unpacked our bags and were given dinner. After the meal we went to get our boots fitted and were allocated our ski equipment for the week.
Over the next 6 days there were 3 ski groups, one was for the people who were very skilled at skiing, there was another group for people who were just a little less skilled and finally there was another group for the beginners on the ski trip.
In the evenings we took part in lots of different activities. On the second night we had some games of bingo where the prizes were different items which had been bought from the local village. Some of the prizes were t-shirts with the ski village logo and ski gloves.
On the third night we all went to a restaurant in Italy by taking a taxi to the bottom of the mountain and then boarding a ride on a skidoo which took 4 people in a cart and one person behind the driver. There were 2 skidoos so it took 3 trips for all of us to get to the restaurant. When we reached our destination we were given a delicious hot chocolate drink and caramel tart.
On other nights we took part in ice skating, pool tournaments and karaoke. Our pool tournament was a very close competition but in the end the winners were Sebastian Van Noortwijk and Joe McDermott.
By the last day, Sunday, most people were getting tired and starting to feel homesick for England and their families.
On arrival back at school, parents were waiting in the pouring rain to welcome us back – some things never change. The end to yet another successful Hollins ski trip!

| Year 10 Drama Workshop - February 2008 |
 |
GCSE drama students undertook a day of drama excercises. Each excercise intended to test their ability to devise and perform from a variety of stimuli. The theme of the day was the holocaust. Pupils looked at different characters from the period and explored reasons why these events happened and whether they could happen again. They had to give characters a history and reason why they were caught in the circumstances in which they were found. One minute a pupil played a Nazi soldier, and had to give justification for the barbarism they inflicted, another minute the pupils could be a prisoner within a concentration camp and have to show the desperation and hopelessness of the situation. Students used physical theatre, dialogue, and other dramatic elements to portray their story. |
| The Hollins in Top 100 - February 2008 |
Reproduced with kind permission of The Lancashire Telegraph
|
The Hollins has been confirmed as one of only two Lancashire schools to appear in the list of the top 100 schools for value added at Key Stage 3. This identifies the most effective schools at helping children make progress between the ages of 11 and 14. This valuation was reflected in our recent Ofsted inspection report where achievement in Key Stage 3 was judged ‘outstanding’. |
| An Audience With Author Joseph Delaney - February 2008 |
 |
Lee and Orion met local author Joseph Delaney at Moorhead High School this week. Joseph's series of books 'The Wardstone Chronicles' starts with 'The Spook's Apprentice' and tells the tale of Tom Ward who is apprenticed to the local 'Spook' (a person who exorcises restless spirits). The tales are set in 'The County' which is based on Lancashire.
Pupils from Hyndburn primary & secondary schools enjoyed a lunch with Joseph before hearing him speak about his books, how he writes, what inspires him, how he got his first book published and which other authors inspire him. There was also a lively questions and answer session before everyone took the chance to get their books signed or buy new ones.
The next book in the series, book 5, 'The Spook's Mistake' is due for release on 5th June 2008. Joseph is currently writing book 6. We can't wait!! |
| Forum Theatre - February 2008 |
| |
A group of Year 9 puils visited Accrington Libray on Monday 11th February to attend a 'Forum Theatre' performed by the 'Dead Ernest Theatre Company'. The play had only 3 characters exploring prejudice, both ageist and racist, based on true stories of local people. The audience watched the play, discussed some of the issues raised and then were encouraged to stop the play at critical points and either make a point about what was happening or ask the characters a question. It made the pupils think about prejudice and involved them in acting out alternative scenarios. |

| Badminton |
| Several teams from the Hollins took part in the under 14s HRV Badminton Tournament this week (Februaury 2008). Emily Caldecott and Becky O’Rourke got through to the finals but were narrowly beaten. Well done to all students who took part in this very enjoyable event. |
| Year 7 & 8 Inter Schools Orienteering Competition - January 2008 |
Sixteen Hollins students took part in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership orienteering competition held at Wilsons Playing Fields.
They were one of nine schools to take part in the event which has now been running for three years.
The heavy rain for days before had cast doubts over the event going ahead but the weather held off on the day and the event went ahead. The muddy and slippery course made it all the more exciting.
Once all of the teams were back, the fastest four pairs from each school’s times were added up to decide who the winners were. Agonizingly, Hollins were pipped to second place by a mere 18 seconds.
This is a great achievement from our boys and girls, many of whom had never even participated in the sport before.
Well done everyone involved. |
| Enterprise Day - January 2008 |
