Badminton: Several teams from the Hollins took part in the under 14s HRV Badminton Tournament this week (Februaury 2008). Emily Caldecott and Becky O’Rourke got through to the finals but were narrowly beaten. Well done to all students who took part in this very enjoyable event.

Year 7 & 8 Inter Schools Orienteering Competition.
Sixteen Hollins students took part in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Partnership orienteering competition held at Wilsons Playing Fields.
They were one of nine schools to take part in the event which has now been running for three years.
The heavy rain for days before had cast doubts over the event going ahead but the weather held off on the day and the event went ahead. The muddy and slippery course made it all the more exciting.
Once all of the teams were back, the fastest four pairs from each school’s times were added up to decide who the winners were. Agonizingly, Hollins were pipped to second place by a mere 18 seconds.
This is a great achievement from our boys and girls, many of whom had never even participated in the sport before.

Well done everyone involved.

Big Lottery Fund Pilot Scheme
Fourteen year 10 boys have been chosen to participate in a pilot scheme to use the conditioning room at Hyndburn Sports Centre. The project is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
The lads were chosen on the basis that they were not doing as much physical activity as they felt they should be and wanted to do something about it. The group will be taken to the gym by Mr Lee every Wednesday for the next 5 weeks and if they complete the course, they will be rewarded with a 3 months free pass to use all the facilities at the Hyndburn Sports Centre.
If the scheme is successful there is the possibility of it running again next year. There will be a project to encourage more year 10 girls to participate later in the year. Watch this space..

Multi Skills Festival
Last Friday, 11th January,  our year 10 sports leaders team up with their counterparts at Mount Carmel and held a multi-skills festival at Hyndburn Sports Centre for our feeder primary schools.
Over the day over 300 year six pupils took part in various activities designed to test agility, balance, coordination and cognitive skills. This was part of a series of festivals held by all secondary schools in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley area.
Our students did an excellent job in making everything run smoothly and were a credit to the school with good feedback from primary school pupils, teachers and members of the public.

Y ear 7 student Leah Taylor put on a fine performance at the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley inter schools gymnastics competition held at Norden High School on 27 th November. She finished 2 nd overall in the vault competition, which is an excellent achievement considering she was competing against fifty other gymnasts. The Hollins team of five did very well overall and put in a more solid performance than last year. Although they did not win, the girls put on a good performance.

The Hollins Technology College made it 15 in a row at the annual inter-schools athletics competition held at Witton Park, Blackburn. Their overall win means that they have a record breaking unbeaten run in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley event dating back to 1993!

The winning did not stop there, with both the boys and girls winning the team field event trophies and the girls also won the overall girls team trophy. The Hollins were crowned both Hyndburn champions and overall Hyndburn and Ribble Valley champions for the fifteenth year.

There were some exceptional individual performances. In the boys, Rohail Iqbal won both the 100m and triple jump to be crowned year 7 overall boys champion. Nathanial Dickinson was 1st in the Discus with an impressive throw of 21m 70cm. Hamzah Aslam won the year 8 javelin and it was a great day for Alan Holliday who, after finishing second in his heat, stormed through to win the 400m final with a personal best of 1 minute 7 seconds.

Mr Vizzard the head of PE said,

“I am immensely proud of everyone who competed today. These results are a tribute to all the hard work and effort that our students put into their sport and especially athletics. We had many individual winners many with personal bests but I must also mention those who finished in the points positions in their events because they helped us to this great victory. ”

Year 7 & 8 Girls Basketball.

The Hollins girls’ basketball team represented Hyndburn at the Lancashire Youth Games in Blackpool on Saturday 30th June 2007.
10 teams from the Lancashire area took part with the competition split into two groups. After winning all four of their group games the girls met South Ribble in the final.
After a close game, the opposition’s height advantage took its toll and South Ribble ran out winners. However, the girls were pleased with their efforts as they were the only Hyndburn team to come home with a medal.

Josh Ward and Ashley Brierley represented Hyndburn at the Lancashire Youth Games at Stanley Park, Blackpool on Saturday 30th June.
They were members of the 10 strong orienteering team who had to endure the horrendous weather conditions and use their map to find their way through muddy fields, puddles and the cold.
Although the Hyndburn team did not win the competition, they performed well and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Accrington and District Primary Schools Cup

Friday saw the re-launch of the Accrington and District Football Cup, sponsored by Apollo Insurance Services and held at The Hollins Technology College. The competition has been running since the turn of the century, with the first winners being Union Street School in 1906, however, dwindling numbers taking part has lead to a re-vamp where a one off tournament decides who the district champions will be. The re-organisation has been a team effort between Simon Airey of St John with St Augustine primary school and Cherie Hughes and Gary Lee from The Hollins.

15 schools took part with teams split into two groups. Baxenden St Johns and St Marys, Oswaldtwistle went through to the semi-finals as groups winners, Peel Park and St Anne’s & St Joseph’s made up the final four as group runners up.

The first semi between St Mary’s and St Anne’s & St Joseph’s was a close encounter with both teams having chances, St Mary’s won through with the only goal of the game. The other semi-final was even more of a nail biter. With the game goalless after normal time, the match went into golden goal extra time, where Baxenden won through with an early strike.

In a fiercely contested final between two of the pre-tournament favourites, it was Baxenden who looked the more likely scorers. The St Mary’s goal lived a charmed life, however it was from a counter attack that they broke away and scored the winner, the only goal that Baxenden had conceded in the whole competition.

The Mayor Tony Dobson and his wife Trish presented the trophy and the medals to the winners.
