Accrington
and District Primary Schools Cup

Friday saw the re-launch of the Accrington and District Football Cup, sponsored by Apollo Insurance Services and held at The Hollins Technology College. The competition has been running since the turn of the century, with the first winners being Union Street School in 1906, however, dwindling numbers taking part has lead to a re-vamp where a one off tournament decides who the district champions will be. The re-organisation has been a team effort between Simon Airey of St John with St Augustine primary school and Cherie Hughes and Gary Lee from The Hollins.

15 schools took part with teams split into two groups. Baxenden St Johns and St Marys, Oswaldtwistle went through to the semi-finals as groups winners, Peel Park and St Anne’s & St Joseph’s made up the final four as group runners up.

The first semi between St Mary’s and St Anne’s & St Joseph’s was a close encounter with both teams having chances, St Mary’s won through with the only goal of the game. The other semi-final was even more of a nail biter. With the game goalless after normal time, the match went into golden goal extra time, where Baxenden won through with an early strike.

In a fiercely contested final between two of the pre-tournament favourites, it was Baxenden who looked the more likely scorers. The St Mary’s goal lived a charmed life, however it was from a counter attack that they broke away and scored the winner, the only goal that Baxenden had conceded in the whole competition.

The Mayor Tony Dobson and his wife Trish presented the trophy and the medals to the winners.
