The Hollins offers a broad and balanced curriculum to suit the needs of all students. All national curriculum subjects are followed at key stage 3 with the addition of Learning 2 Learn in Year 7. There is a major emphasis on literacy for lower ability classes in key stage 3 with extra curriculum time provided for this. Numeracy is also catered for with extra lessons at lunchtime and after school.
The majority of classes are taught in ability groups with the exception of physical education and design technology. At key stage 4 there is a varied and relevant range of options for students to study. All students will study English, English Literature, mathematics and science (core and additional) and religious education. For all but a few students this will be at GCSE level. The vast majority of students will study a further GCSE subject from the English Baccalaureatte group of history, geography, French, Spanish triple science or computing and all students follow a design technology GCSE which they start in Year 9.
Two further options will be followed from a range of GCSE subjects with the addition of equivalent courses in ICT and business studies. A double GCSE in Engineering is taught jointly with Training2000 and our least able students are catered for through level 1 workskills and the Build, Achieve, Succeed (BAS) AQA unit awards.
